Finally, I watched Ravanan yday at home and managed to finish the movie in one shot. Within the first 2 mins of the movie, I realized that I didn’t waste my time and money going to the theatre!
Since I have a laundry list of negatives about the movie, let me just quote my positives first. Pluses: Vikram’s acting and he looked very young for his age (he is a 54 year old!). Ash was stunning, and funny that a 35 year old is the wife of a 26 year old! This seldom happens in Indian movies where teen girls and 50+ olds run around trees singing duet songs! ManiRatnam always manages to have the best of Cinematographers and other technicians. This movie followed the trend with respect to those. I liked the last scene in the train. Reasonably good climax. But, poor for Mani’s standard.
Okay, now the negatives: 1. Initially, I felt that it was a remake of Roja, instead of wife rescuing hubby, here its hubby rescuing wife. To some extent, this is true. 2. I felt bad for Karthik. Was he obligated to say yes to Maniratnam for this role?! He used to be heartthrob of all the girls once up on a time and he literally appeared retarded or like ‘loosu’ or even disgusting, and this role of Hanuman really doesn’t need such a portrayal. 3. Sorry for Prabhu’s role as well. 4. Story was a bummer 5. One of the first scenes, where Prithviraj learns over the phone about his wife being kidnapped – ‘yaen’ – pause –‘yenga’ pause – ‘yeppo’, felt like spoof of Mani’s film. Feel free to add more to this list..
