I have been recently coming across news stories on Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital and it's founder Dr Shetty. The motto of the hospital is do only one thing delivering the highest quality. The Narayana Hrudayalaya works on the heart. Period. The Narayana hospitals have further expanded over the past 5+ years to include other specialized hospitals for cancer, eye surgery etc.

Some key fascinating facts the heart hospital:
- does more surgical procedures than the Cleveland clinic and Boston Childrens hospital
- success rates or comparable or better than hospitals in the US and UK
- charges $2500 for open heart surgery (10-50 times lower than the US)
- charges $1200 or free for those who can't afford
- runs insurance plan for farmers ($3 per year) and cover all surgical expenses
- ward system, "production line" of sugeries
- doctors work more than Us hospitals, perform 2-3 times more procedure per day but get paid comparable to private hospitals in India (US$110-220k per annum)
- the hospital accounts for 12% of cardiac care in India which affords it bargaining power like Walmart
- companies provide instruments for free while earning profist through reagents (the hospital runs the instruments to highest capacity)
- the model provides for the highest quality while keeping the unit cost low on tests and procedures
- Plans underway for a hospital in the Caymans to cater to American patients
Should this be the motto for government hospitals too in India? One high capacity, high quality hospital focusing on just one thing..?
