Here's a Q & A Session I had with Admissions Director Mr.James Frick.
Q. I am trying to get a better understanding of what the Admissions Committee is looking for in the essays of an applicant who's a career switcher (like me)...For career switchers, it may not be entirely possible to connect their Pre-MBA experience to the Post-MBA career. While I understand there has to be some sort of connect, how does the Admissions committee evaluate if such career switches are entirely possible at all?
A. Happy to speak to your question as best I can. I think the best thing a candidate can do is to research the intended post-mba career path. Industry guides, talking with alumni who are doing that work currently, etc. Once you do so, you’ll likely arrive at a set of skills/experiences that you need, which will help you position why the degree and why a particular program. Most likely, you’ll also see you already have some of those necessary skills/experiences, we might call those transferable skills. Thus, in your essays, you can work to highlight those skills. Also, letting the committee know you’ve done this kind of research in advance will resonate as it’s a sign of professional maturity.
